Iris, Rodin, Portland Art Museum

I'm part of a thriving community of makers in Portland, Oregon. We're known as Layer Geeks and even have our own club on meetup.com called the “Portland 3D printing lab”. We love discussing 3D printing and challenging each other to create new things. We also enjoy working on fun projects like 3D printing a life-size cow. This project stands out as one of my favorites so far, the Portland Art Museum asked me to 3D scan statues from the Cantor foundation's collection based on Auguste Rodin's work. With patience and precision, I guide my iPad equipped with the Structure scanner from Occipital. In real-time, I can see the object being recorded into a 3D printable format on my iPad. Using Autodesk's Meshmixer application, I size and clean up the scan. The Portland art Museum made this opportunity possible, and I feel grateful to be able to share these scans with fellow makers. Check out "Auguste Rodin: The Human Experience" if you can (the exhibit continues through April 2017). I invite you to have fun with the scans, create them for yourself or a friend so you too can be part of the maker movement and experience the thrill of bringing new ideas to life.
