iPhone 7 FRiEQ case bike adapter
thingiverse
This is a bike stem mount for owners of the FRiEQ iPhone 7 armband case and the stock stem on a circa 2014 Canondale Synapse. The FRiEQ system consists of an always-on case and precisely-fitting outer shell into which the phone slides. If you're a user of the armband system, having a similarly secure mount on your bike is great! The bike stem mount consists of two pieces: an insert for the FRiEQ shell and a base mount for the bike stem. The two are joined using m3 machine screws with captive hex nuts. Why not create a replacement for the portion manufactured by FRiEQ? You could. Its tolerances are quite precise, though, and it would have taken a considerable amount of work to quantify and replicate. For the price, I decided that buying another FRiEQ was simpler, but I welcome contributions from anyone who wants to make this project completely printable. Recommendations for your build: - Use a soldering iron to coax the m3 nuts into position with heat. The model is not designed to fit them without heat to get them in place. - Place a section of bicycle innertube between the stem and base mount to prevent sliding. - Affix the base mount with zip ties. A hose clamp will work fine too, but it's heavier. - Be careful not to use much force when inserting the screws: if misthreaded into the nuts you can easily snap off the supporting plastic arms of the base. If it's resisting, back it out, apply some sideways pressure to get a different angle on the screw, and try again. - The base mount is designed for the somewhat idiosyncratic flanging of my Canondale Synapse stem. I suspect that some padding, innertube rubber or modifications in Sketchup could make it fit your bike nicely, too. This system appears quite secure, but I have not put enough miles on it to be 100% certain that the PLA will stand up to ultraviolet light, that vibration won't damage the mount, or that anything else won't go wrong. Use at your own risk.
