I've been holding onto an old iPhone 5 docking station since I upgraded to my iPhone 6 years ago. It's been rendered useless because the slot where you place your iPhone 5 is too narrow to fit any later models with a case in place, and I just didn't feel like removing the case every time. The lightning connector remains the same, which made it unfortunate that I couldn't use this expensive original Apple part anymore. So, I designed a new top that fits over the existing bottom part, which holds the lightning female and male connectors. The bottom features an aluminum bracket to add counterweight to the docking station, making it more stable. To accommodate phones with cases, I had to use a bench grinder to grind away a few millimeters of material from the original design. This extra space is now available for later models. Take a look at the photos: you'll see the new printed top part on the left and the original iPhone 5 top on the right.
