iPhone 14 Pro hands-on: Don't call it a notch
thingiverse
Today was the farewell day for Apple's "Far Out" iPhone release. In addition to abandoning the iPhone mini version, Apple also ditched the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro in favor of a bell-shaped cut. The company calls it a "dynamic island" at the top of the screen. iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max also have brighter screens that allows to use it for apps like https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lily-plant-identification/id1570145257 more comfortable, and an always-on display, so you can always see your most important information . I spent some time with the new devices at Apple's Cupertino event, and I have to say that while the dynamic island still looks very obvious, it also feels a lot more useful. The difference is that the user interface now makes better use of space by displaying different information in it. When I started a timer in the Timer app or played a song in Apple Music, an orange dot appeared on the island to indicate something was happening. When I exited the app, the island displayed a waveform indicating that the recorder was running or playing music. When I long-pressed the island while a function was running, the box expanded to show more controls. Apple Music, for example, has expanded to show a playback progress bar with rewind, pause, and skip buttons underneath. The timer and voice memo will display the list and stop recording the checks. Here, the software cleverly covers the camera hole so that it never interrupts the content and remains hidden in the empty black area. Of course, I've only used Apple's own first-party apps on the iPhone 14 so far, and third-party options may not be compatible. When nothing happened, a long press on a dynamic island resulted in a light stress animation and light haptic feedback. If you look closely at the device, you can also see a 12-megapixel TrueDepth camera in the lower right corner. Again, it's not quite full screen, but the camera hole seems better hidden than before. Not to mention, the iPhone 14 Pro also has an updated camera system with a new 8MP rear camera supported by Apple's new Photonic Engine for improved low-light performance. I couldn't test it here in the brightly lit demo mode, and I couldn't test the new action mode for video stabilization. But the iPhone 14 Pro has a lot of improvements on the video and camera front, like movie mode support with up to 4K resolution and 30fps frame rate, which we were able to check out in our full review.
