iPhone 12 Pro Max Flexible Case

This is a flexible case for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This must be printed in TPU, TPE, or other flexible materials including some nylons.

Do NOT print this in PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, or any other material that is not flexible. You may not be able to get this on your phone if you do!

Apple did a great job designing this iPhone by protecting the edge of the glass from being hit when dropped. Other brands have the glass go right to the edge which is the most likely place for cracking a screen. However, this print provides even more protection with an edge that is 2mm higher than the glass.

The last feature of this print is the thickness of the back. It is about 1mm thicker than the protruding lenses so the glass on the lenses do not touch the surface when the phone is sitting on a desk, for example.

Like most of my prints here, I designed this for myself. But it fits nicely so I thought that I could share this with others.

The first image is a render done in Cinema4D with the Arnold renderer, the next three are actual prints, and the last image is a render in Fusion 360.

Print instructions

I printed this in TPU with supports. The back is blank and a perfect place to insert an SVG or text to customize it. The print is properly oriented for printing.

I would also recommend using a semi-flex TPU, something with a Shore hardness of 98A (Ninjatek SemiFlex and Fillamentum are examples.) I did print one out in 85A and it did work, but I felt that the case may come off too easily.

I have found that some flexible filaments do not bridge very well so supports are recommended because of the openings and the top overhang. You may need to pull hard to remove the supports, but don't worry about damaging the print since most flexible filaments are VERY strong.

I did not include any gCode with this because I have found that each flexible material is unique, and even each printer handles flexible material differently.

If you are having difficulties with TPU, the flowing 10 steps have helped me :

1 Reduce the pressure on the extruder gear(s)
2 Reduce your printing speed
3 Use a textured print surface!!!
4 Do not use any heat on the print bed
5 - 10 Dry your TPU filament! (Worth mentioning six times)

I hope this works well for you if you choose to print this. I printed many of these until I got the design just right, then used the final version for several days to make sure it fits and functional. Of course, I have not done a drop test, but I'm sure I will do many unintentional tests in the future.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to improve this, and good luck!
