iPad Magnetic Charging Stand
thingiverse
There are tons of nice charging stand solutions for every other Apple product except the iPad so I decided to make my own. This uses a magnetic charging cable so I can simply slide my iPad Pro into the dock and it will start charging. The hole in the back of the stand will need to be adjusted based on the size of your iPad and its case. In future version I might try to come up with a more flexible solution and would be interested to hear other's ideas. The build will need magnetic charging cables that work with your case. The first set I bought were a little too big but the linked set fits well and has been working reliably for over a year now. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07RHVNFQ6?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share You will also need 18 bearings for the rollers that allow the iPad to slide in and out smoothly. The build is designed to use these in particular but I think the sizing is pretty standard so you might be able to sub in different ones. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07C6FL8TW?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share The build is pretty simple. After you print 9 pins and rollers you can force a bearing on each end of the rollers, put a dab of super glue in the sunken pin hole and then set the pin through the body and roller to secure it. Rinse and repeat. I had to do some aggressive sanding to the the cord with the holder through the hole in the back to be just loose enough that it could move itself around a bit if the iPad wasn't perfectly on target but not so much that it was flopping around. I ended up just heating up some pliers and melting the cuff to the back washer to keep the cord secured. I use a cheap little fingernail drill to do most of my sanding as a dremel can somtimes be overkill and it comes with a ton of little heads it'll take me years to use up. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T8H3531?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share The final product has some heft but if you keep it on a smooth surface it might slide around a bit so I got a little 12x12 rubber sheet to glue to the bottom to keep it in place. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BCMKNW4/ref=cm_sw_r_api_i_GF9KYWAVMPRRWNAV6QPW_0 The case I'm using is a Logitec Slim Folio Pro for my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 inch and it's been rather great. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B086LLNJQX?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share I do the modeling in Shapr3D which I've found really intuitive and nice to use with the Apple Pencil on the iPad https://www.shapr3d.com/ Feedback and ideas to improve the design are very welcome! As I mentioned above I'm thinking about a way to make the cable position more flexible for different size tablets and maybe a way to put in an Apple logo that would glow while charging. Enjoy!
