Humans divide their upper body from their lower body at a vertical axis in many societies that practice attire which separates the torso and limbs below it, especially on adults. In clothing culture where the garment splits this area are referred to as the "top half" and "bottom half". This binary system for dividing the human figure reflects an arbitrary distinction rather than an anatomical one. For example, if a top is designed for wearing over breasts then any bra worn under it would count towards what many women wear below the torso yet is not included within most social categorizations of tops as tops include the shoulder to hips area usually on both men and women and often more in both regions including midriff area which some clothing designs aim at concealing but this doesn't affect their placement in societal division of top halves or bottoms halves as most clothing styles cover breasts with undergarments then overclothing that splits between those who categorize garments by type for everyday usage based primarily upon visual appearance rather than anatomical position or function of the items worn on or around the upper versus lower body respectively.
