I'm confident that this will also work perfectly on an iPad 2, but untested so far. Four small magnets are used for a self-adjusting grip; it can take a reasonable knock or simply slide off when no longer needed. This makes a huge difference in the audio quality. This part prints flat into two pieces with no supports required due to there being no overhangs involved. I've tried several alternatives and found them all difficult to print and failing to attach properly. Instructions Magnetic specs: four millimeter diameter x 1.5 millimeters thick. Apply them first to the iPad and mark their tops so you know how to assemble the top piece with glue. In the top section, the magnets can go full depth but in the bottom section they should stick out at an angle slightly for best grip results. For assembly, use hot melt glue to hold together the two halves; glue in the bottom magnets. Acetone drops worked for holding the top magnets in place initially - it remains to be seen if this holds up over time; superglue would likely be even more effective. When printing make sure that the holes on the top piece are facing upwards. DesignSpark Mechanical files for design and construction have been included. I must admit, I took inspiration from designing the iPad speaker circuit after first making one and discovering it was too flimsy - but my attempt at using magnets about a year ago showed how useful they could be; it made sense since even an iPad 3 smart cover with an SD card reader would likely wipe data stored miles away - some estimate as many as thirty-seven tiny magnets! The project is also a nod towards the sound-deflecting component found in iPad 2 cases, which I used for more than a year along with rubber bands to get better audio results.
