The Ion Frigate is a highly formidable ship in the Hiigaran fleet, its size notwithstanding. With direct energy ion beams that deal devastating damage to like-sized ships, it tears adversaries apart at terrifying speeds, while also causing significant harm to larger vessels that underestimate its capabilities. Its primary drawback of having a single main weapon is somewhat offset by the addition of auxiliary theme-based armaments designed to counter non-capital type ships, but it still lags significantly in secondary capabilities. This forces fleet commanders to deploy multiple vessels alongside it to provide a decent chance for survival during an engagement. When grouped together, these Ion Frigates can take down even the largest and most powerful vessels given sufficient time.
