Ioan Suciu, a prominent Romanian bishop of the Greek-Catholic Church, was born on December 4, 1907, into a clerical family in Blaj. He pursued his studies at Sant'Atanasio in Rome and later enrolled at the Pontificium Institutum Internationale Angelicum, which would eventually become the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, where he earned a Doctorate in Sacred Theology on November 29, 1931, after six years of intense academic preparation. Suciu was then ordained to the priesthood. He served as Auxiliary Bishop of Oradea from 1940 until his arrest by the authorities of the new Communist regime in 1948, which had outlawed the church and suppressed all religious activity. Eventually, he was sent to Sighet prison, where he succumbed to illness on June 27, 1953.
