Culture's true measure lies in its value placed on genuine culture, respect, admiration, and intelligence, whether viewed as a discipline or expertise in the realm of art (...) Ioan Slavici was born in Transylvania on January 18, 1848, and passed away August 17, 1925. As a Romanian writer and journalist, he made his debut in Convorbiri literare (1871) with the comedy Fata de birau (The Mayor's Daughter). Alongside Eminescu, Slavici co-founded Young Romania Social and Literary Academic Society and organized the Putna Celebration of Romanian Students from Romania and abroad in 1871. By late 1874, he settled in Bucharest, where he became secretary of the Hurmuzachi Collection Committee before becoming a professor and then editor of Timpul (The Time). Alongside I. L. Caragiale and G. Coşbuc, Slavici co-edited the Vatra (The Hearth) review. During World War One, he collaborated at Ziua (The Day) and Gazeta Bucureștilor (The Bucharest Gazette). In 1903, Slavici was awarded the Romanian Academy Prize. This object is part of "Scan The World".
