Ion Dragalina, a renowned Romanian general, was born on 16 December 1860 in the city of Caransebes, then under Austro-Hungarian rule. As a descendant of a military family, Ioan's father, Alexandru Dragalina, served as an officer in the Austro-Hungarian army until his resignation in 1859. The family relocated to Romania after Alexandru was appointed administrator of the border region, but Marta Lazaroni, Ioan's mother, insisted on giving birth at her ancestral home in Caransebes. Their first son, Ioan, was born in 1860, marking the beginning of a family with four sons.
