Invisible Airport Express / Apple TV Wall Mount (adaptable)
thingiverse
I've got a few airport express devices that can help expand my network, and I want to mount them on the wall. There are already several options for this on Thingiverse, but I wanted something invisible. Here's my contribution to the pile of mounting options. Assembly and installation video: https://vid.me/1xQJ This also works for Apple TV devices (I think mine is a 3rd Gen version). **Parts and Materials** * Three #4 pan head screws with heads 2.5mm thick or less * Five-minute epoxy * 3D printed centering ring, glue mask, object plate, wall plate **Process** Attach the centering ring to the device. Place the glue mask inside the centering ring. Apply epoxy without going past or filling the ooze channel. Remove the glue mask. Use a thin layer to prevent oozing. Place the object plate that will be attached to the device in the centering ring, with the open end pointed toward the side with all of the sockets if you want the cord to hang downward. If you're careful about the amount of glue you use, you can leave the centering ring in place. If you fear side ooze, remove the centering ring or it may get glued in place. If you get side ooze into the center channel, you must remove everything, clean off the epoxy with acetone, and start over. If you fill that channel with ooze, it won't slide onto the wall plate. Finally, place a weight on the piece and let it cure (one hour for five-minute epoxy). Screw the wall plate to a wall with #4 pan head screws, and slide the device on the wall plate. This sounds sort of involved, but when I videotaped the process, it took just under six minutes, most of which I cut out for the demo video. **0.5 mm Nozzle** My printer (Lulzbot Mini) has a 0.5 mm nozzle installed. If you have a printer with a smaller nozzle, the parts might be a tad loose. You can either scale the wall plate up to account for this in your slicer, or you could edit the source files which I have included (freeCAD native file format). You may also have to scale down the centering tool to remove unwanted play. **Stick on Anything** There's no reason this process couldn't be used on any device or object (of appropriate weight). I've included the centering square without any arms if you'd like a simple way to create an invisible mount for some other object. Just make your own arms and stick the centering plate on them. **Other Types of Wall Mounts** The invisible nature of my mount is cool, but what's less cool is the necessity to permanently mar your device by epoxying stuff to it. The following wall mounts require no modifications to your device: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:146026 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:218720 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:261197 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:329873 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:455862 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:616642 http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:621382 (only blue image) http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:820274 (only blue image) If you know of more, please let me know and I'll add to the list.
