I needed a backup power supply and a nice way to connect 3.5" HDD to home server running on Intel NUC (gen8). I came up with this tower to which NUC is mounted to.

Mechanics are obvious from photos and a 3D model. There is a lot of space inside to house other gadgets connected to NUC if you like.

For uninterruptible power supply I used a simple two diode OR. Original NUC power supply is 19V. Backup battery is 4S Li-Ion with max voltage of 16.8V Power is always drawn from source with higher voltage. When grid power is present all power for NUC and internal HDD is drawn from AC adapter. When grid power goes out NUC is immediately switched to battery. As Intel NUC is specified to have 12V to 19V four cell Li-Ion battery is ideal for the job. Battery should be equipped with a protection circuit. I used recycled cells and no-name protection circuit.

There is no automatic battery re-charging implemented!

Battery is only for short term blackouts. There is JST RCY (so called BEC connector) to connect common RC charger to recharge the battery. But this will be needed hopefully once per two years or so.

There is small DC/DC supply of 12V for 3.5" disk.

Dual Schottky diode is mounted on round piece of aluminum for cooling. This is leftover from CNC machining. If you decide to build this, download .step model and edit back plate according to your needs. Diode may probably even stay uncooled. But I would recommend to mount it on any piece of metal. Beware that mounting tab is connected to middle leg!

3D model of Intel NUC was downloaded from here:
https://grabcad.com/library/nuc8i7beh-1

Print instructions

Download .stp file and edit back plate according to your needs (at least cooler for the diode)

Do not print as is and than complain that you can not obtain something.

Main case is better printed with more perimeters to create solid walls. Main case should be oriented by solid side to bed and no supports.
