The LM555 is a highly stable device for generating precise time delays or oscillation, functioning as both an astable and monostable oscillator. It's a direct replacement for SE555/NE555 with timing capabilities ranging from microseconds to hours via additional triggering or resetting terminals. In the time delay mode, the accuracy is controlled by one external resistor and capacitor. For astable operation as an oscillator, the free-running frequency and duty cycle are adjustable using two external resistors and one capacitor. The output circuit can source or sink 200 mA, is TTL compatible, and the device operates at a temperature stability of better than 0.005% per degree Celsius. It's typically used in applications such as precision timing, pulse generation, sequential timing, time delay generation, pulse width modulation, pulse position modulation, linear ramp generator, among others. The LM555 is available in an 8-pin VSSOP package with normally on and normally off output options.
