Insigna Ring, Melrose Abbey

Insigna Ring, Melrose Abbey

sketchfab

This medieval bone ring was unearthed at Melrose Abbey in the eighties. It bears an intricately carved letter 'W'. Its original owner likely employed it as a personal seal – a custom akin to our modern-day signature. The distinct images etched onto seal rings like this one would have served as unmistakable identifiers, used to authenticate documents and letters with the sender's mark. A portion of this ring is now lost, its lower half missing in action. For further details on visiting Melrose Abbey, please refer to our website at your earliest convenience. Its dimensions measure 25 x 15 x 12mm. Catalogued as MEL-337 within the Rae Project archives.
