InSight aims to study the internal structure of Mars by deploying a geophysical station on the surface of the planet in a fixed lander. The objective: To elucidate the mechanisms that preside over the formation of the rocky planets of the solar system. Thanks to the SEIS (Seismic Experiment for Interior Structures) seismometer, the device measures the tectonic activity of Mars in order to deduce information on its structure (size of the core, thickness of the mantle, etc.). Meteorite impacts are also analysed, via the seismic waves generated. As for the HP3 (Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package) sensor, it evaluates the planet's cooling rate in order to reconstruct its "thermal history". Finally, the RISE (Rotation and Interior Structure Experiment) instrument quantifies variations in the rotation axis of the red planet.
