Mir, meaning 'peace' or 'world,' was a Soviet-owned space station operational from 1986 to 2001 in low Earth orbit. Assembled in orbit between 1986 and 1996, Mir was the first modular space station with a greater mass than any previous spacecraft. It was the largest artificial satellite until March 21, 2001, when succeeded by the International Space Station following Mir's orbit decay. The station served as a microgravity research laboratory where crews conducted experiments in various fields like biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology, and spacecraft systems to develop technologies for permanent space occupation.
