We set out to craft an art installation called "Humans Don't Need to Count," which delves into the theme of jobs lost to robots and raises questions about whether humans should be tasked with repetitive, mundane work. To create this unique piece, we made significant modifications to the hand and forearm to enable them to hold a tally counter in place. A fishing line, attached to a robust DC motor (available at pololu.com/product/2826), was used to supply the necessary force outside of the arm. The fishing line passes through the ring finger, while a custom holder allows for secure attachment directly to the wall. To maintain stability and precision, we fixed the wrist and all fingers except the thumb in place, ensuring the tally counter is held firmly. Unnecessary holes were removed from the design, and the thumb was slightly altered to reach the tally counter's button, which is positioned close to the palm of the hand.
