I'm intrigued by the prospect of crafting a differential amplifier to monitor the two tiny microphones that came bundled with the webcams for the eyes. This setup can be used to establish sound directionality, allowing the InMoov to focus its gaze in the desired direction. To prepare the ear hole for the microphone mounts, I drilled out the back using a 1/4 inch bit, making sure not to drill too deeply – about a 1/4 inch at most. The microphones fit snugly into their respective mounts, and I applied a bed of silicone on the inside of the ear as well as on the bottom of each mount before letting everything cure. Next, I coated another layer of silicone onto the mounts and used a clothespin to weigh them down while they cured. Finally, I surrounded the mounted microphones with silicone, expecting it to act as a damper and isolate the mic from vibrations in the plastic itself, as well as those caused by servos and other external factors. This setup should enable the ear to function similarly to a real ear, channeling sound directly into the small cavity just in front of each microphone. This low-and-slow approach proved effective in producing well-formed parts – unlike the initial blobs of mush that resulted from printing at higher speeds.
