It is well known that the Wright brothers made their first powered flight on the "Wright Flyer" on December 17, 1903. For the “Wright Flyer”, several plastic models are on sale. For the engine that the “Wright brothers” made themselves, I made a functional 3D printer model that can explain the structure, mechanism and system for teaching purpose. A. The features incorporated in the model are as follows; ① Horizontal 4 Cylinder Engine (Crankcase, Crankshaft, Cylinder, Piston) ② Side Mounted Combustion Chamber (Automatic Intake Valve, Exhaust Valve, Ignition Contact Switch, Ignition Plug) ③ By Timing Chain Cam Shaft for Exhaust Valve, Rocker Arm Cam Shaft for Ignition Switch, Spring Lever, Ignition Advance Device ④ Fuel Supply Pipe, Carburetor Passage, Intake Manifold ⑤ Oil Pump for suppling oil to Piston, Supply and Return Pipe Line ⑥ Worm Gear Set to drive Oil Pump ⑦ Friction Driven DC Generator, Electrical Bus Bar, Wiring ⑧ Flywheel, Sprockets for Propeller Drive, Holding Mechanism for Propeller Shafts ⑨ Water Piping to/from Radiator (Water Reservoir) B. Display Tools to watch the side and bottom of Engine ⑩ Inverted Display Stand (Water Piping and Electrical wiring are divided) ⑪ Hand Knob to rotate Crankshaft (Motor Drive is optional) C. Typical Places where alternative methods are used ・ 1 piece Crankcase・・・2 pieces Cases and Glued ・ 1 piece Crankshaft・・・3 pieces Shaft and Assembled ・ Assembly of Threading (Cylinder Liner, Combustion Chamber, Valve Nut) ・・・Screw, Glued ・ Timing Chain ・・・ Larger sized because commercial chain is used ・ Piston Ring ・・・Eliminated to reduce friction drag for rotation ・ Babbit (White) Metal Bearing ・・・ Use 3D printer material (Eliminated) ・ Exhaust Valve Spring ・・・ Single Spring (to reduce rotational drag) ・ Other parts difficult to machine with hand tools ・ ・ ・ Divided / glued or integrated D. Assembly Manual (PDF format, total 34 pages) The detail assembly manual including "Parts-List", "After printing treatment" and "Assembly procedure" are prepared based on "Standard Skill (Filing, Drilling, Tapping and painting)". F. General Notes 1. Roller Chain - Tsubakimoto Chain RS15-1-RP-U 2. For M1.4 Screw No need “Tapping”. Drill with φ1.0 drill then direct screw-in. 3. STL file “ws” of last 2 digits of file name means “With Support” special designed. Total STL files are 91 items including the stand and tools. (Except Motor Drive) G. Total Net Print Time: Approx. 90 HR - (Estimated as case of PLA, 0.4mm Nozzle, 0.2mm Layer Height, 40% infill and No raft and support) Note: When at actual print, each parameter may be adjusted by your experience. J. Printing settings Raft, Support, Layer Height, Infill: Depending on your experience. My models were printed by "idbox" using with 0.4 nozzle, 1.75 PLA. I do hope your patience and success.
