The Inklings are the species that players control in Splatoon and Splatoon 2, being a race of squids capable of taking humanoid form at just 14 years old. They have evolved significantly from their animal ancestors, which adapted to life after the planet's great flood. Unlike these predecessors, however, the Inklings are not equipped to survive underwater and thrive in urban societies where ink-based territorial control is the favored sport. To compensate for this limitation, they use their swimming skills exclusively to plunge into ink and swim at high velocities. Coexisting peacefully with several other species, the Inklings dominate Chromopolis, second only to jellyfish in population density. As a result of their perpetual revelry and fascination with fashion and music, the Inklings have been engaged in a centuries-long rivalry with the Octarians, whose combat ethos is rooted in order and discipline.
