Inkhorn
myminifactory
Carl Michael Bellman received this unique inkhorn as a gift from King Gustav III of Sweden when he took on the role of court secretary in 1776. Initially designed for washing brushes, it was crafted in China during the first half of the 18th century. A soapstone container is surrounded by a small human figure flanked by lotus flowers. Once transformed into an inkhorn in Sweden, it gained a crowned silver lid along with a commemorative inscription. Upon lifting the lid, another message becomes visible: "NECKEN.HAN.TITTAR.UR.HAFVET.UPP", translating to The Neck looking out of the sea. In Swedish folklore, The Neck is believed to be a water spirit that lures people into the water, leading to their demise. The inscription and figurine were likely intended to bring Bellman laughter each time he opened the lid to dip his pen.
