Initial Mars Base

Initial Mars Base

thingiverse

Basics (well not so basic) • Module to be transported via spacex on falcon rocket. • Module concept developed off spacex dragon 2 capsule. • Module enters mars via nasa inflatable heat shield and dragon 2 re-entry rockets. Module design ideas • Due to the limited gravity on mars, inflation of the module will be easier than on earth. • The light weight construction of the frames due to 3d printing technologies will also aide in the erection of the unit. • Utilising lightweight but ultra-strong fabric such as that used on the space station as the outer and inner skins of the module will save on weight. • Once the module is erect, liquid insulation/foam will be sprayed in the middle layer aiding in thermal protection and added protection from the harsh environment of mars. • To achieve the insertion of the foam into the middle layer, the internal frame will have holes positioned along its length. • The inner fabric will have a network of pipes to aide in the even distribution of the foam. • An internal heating/cooling system will be situated in the floor of the module with the power units also being located in the floor. • Electricity to the module will be provided via internal batteries and pv cells. Alternatively a central electricity system will be provided i.e. an array of solar panels connected to an electrical substation module once a more established mars base has been erected. • Electricity to be distributed under the bridge as per the oxygen path ways. Other modules will house such items as water treatment plants, bathrooms, sleeping quarters, laboratories, greenhouses and general storage modules. • Grappling lugs to be located under bridge to allow for connection of interconnecting modules Further investigations: • Rib design to allow increase capacity • Experiment with hatch size to allow for ease of flow between modules. • Investigate balancing of module size vs resources needed i.e. oxygen and electricity (heating) • Utilising the trunks of the transport rockets for additional not critical items which will be provided on mars via smaller re-entry rockets • Housing small power plants for co2 processing equipment.
