In extreme circumstances, ventilators are in short supply, leaving death as the likely outcome. At this point, a makeshift ventilator can be constructed with basic workshop equipment. The top shelf must be sturdy enough to compress the ambibag when the wheel is turned. Clamp settings on the four cylinders should limit airflow from the bag. Adjusting the motor (red) speed will change the number of breaths provided per minute. A pressure valve is necessary to regulate pressure applied to the patient. The blue oval represents the ambibag, which supplies air to the patient. It's hoped that this design can be mass-produced for patients in pandemic situations where traditional ventilators are overwhelmed. This model should not replace real ventilators under normal circumstances; it's intended for emergency use only and requires further testing.
