Maharaja refers to a "great ruler," "high king," or "king" of great stature. Rana or Maharana has essentially been an equivalent title to Maharaja. The female counterpart, Maharani (or Maharanee, Mahārājñī), signifies the wife of a Maharaja or Maharana, and also in states where this was customary, a woman ruling on her own right bore the title Maharani. A queen mother is known as Rajmata following the passing of a Maharaja. The titles Maharaj refer to distinct noble and spiritual offices, despite the fact that in Hindi, the suffix 'a' in Maharaja is often silent, making the two terms nearly indistinguishable.
