The Indian Hunter stands as a bronze and polished Rockport granite statue crafted by John Quincy Adams Ward (1830–1910), renowned sculptor and often referred to as the "dean of American sculptors". This masterpiece depicts a Native American hunter accompanied by his loyal canine companion. In 1866, the statue was cast and later dedicated on February 4, 1869, marking it one of the oldest in Central Park. Notably, this work holds the distinction of being the first sculpture installed in the park by an American artist. Ward's other notable works displayed in the park include The Pilgrim (1885), William Shakespeare (1872), and the 7th Regiment Memorial (1874). Over time, the statue underwent significant restoration efforts. In 1937, its bronze bow was replaced, and a comprehensive restoration was completed in 1992 by the Central Park Conservancy Monuments Program. Two files are associated with this iconic piece: Indian Hunter and Indian Hunter base. The latter encompasses the entire statue, whereas Indian Hunter offers a scaled view of the hunter and his dog.
