The selected monument was that of the iconic and awe-inspiring Independence Tower Monument - an imposing obelisk. Located in the heart of Yaoundé's vibrant Hippodrome neighborhood, it stands tall as a symbol of the city's rich history. As one of the largest squares in Yaounde, the Hippodrome stretches from the Ministry of Communication on its southern side to the prestigious French high school Fustel de Coulanges on its northern end. The site underwent a remarkable transformation courtesy of the Yaoundé Urban Council (CUY). From a distance, the obelisk's grandeur is unmistakable, beckoning visitors to approach its base. However, as is customary in places steeped in history and reverence, one must first pay homage by "facing" the magnificent sculptures of regal lions seated majestically on either side. The Independence Square itself is rectangular in shape, boasting two stunning artificial fountains, each elegantly adorned with statues of ladies with radiant faces. Conveniently situated nearby are seating areas for visitors, ensuring a comfortable experience while taking in the sights. Ample parking facilities are also available for those arriving by vehicle.
