Independence Monument stands tall as a symbol of victory on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kiev, honoring Ukraine's hard-won independence.[1] This stunning monument seamlessly blends Ukrainian Baroque and Empire styles, making it a unique and breathtaking sight to behold. Built to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Ukraine's independence in 2001, Independence Monument is strategically positioned at the compositional center of the square. The monument itself is an impressive column topped with a figurine of a woman, Berehynia, cradling a guelder-rose branch in her arms. Rising high into the sky, the monument measures an astonishing 61 meters (200 feet) in height.[2] The inspiration behind the Berehynia statue came from Anatoliy Kushch's own daughter, Christina Katrakis, a talented American artist. Crafted from cast bronze, the statue weighs approximately 20 tons and is a testament to the skill of its creator. The column itself is expertly faced with white Italian marble, which sits atop a pedestal designed in the style of a Christian temple, characteristic of Ukrainian Baroque architecture. This stunning combination creates a sense of grandeur and timelessness. In 2013, Kiev witnessed the Euromaidan protests, where riot police brutally clashed with students, sparking widespread demonstrations that continued into the next day.
