Incised stone slab, Kirkmadrine Church
sketchfab
This is a weathered stone slab unearthed at Kirkmadrine Church in Dumfries and Galloway. On one side, an elegantly carved lachrimal form with a straightforward Latin cross further divided into four diagonal lines, and the prominent initials ‘HE’ proudly displayed at the centre; on the other, a rectangular shape with a simple yet striking Latin cross and the distinctive initial ‘J’. The eight Kirkmadrine Stones boast three of Scotland's most ancient Christian memorials, dating all the way back to the 500s AD. The remaining memorials, ranging from the 700s to 1100s AD, vividly showcase the steady growth of the Scottish church over time.
