Incised headstone, Kirkmadrine Church

Incised headstone, Kirkmadrine Church

sketchfab

This is an intricately carved headstone from Kirkmadrine Church, its inscription pinpointing it as the earliest stone unearthed there. Like the 'Latinus' stone at Whithorn, the inscription is skillfully arranged in neat horizontal rows and the Roman letters firmly place it within the mainstream of Late Antique Latin epigraphy across the west. The engraving boasts a clear Chi-Rho cross and the lettering mentions two priests named Viventius and Mavorius. This engraving on this stone stands as one of the clearest records of an operational ecclesiastical hierarchy anywhere in Britain and Ireland during the 6th century.
