Incised chalk plaque, Whitehawk Camp, Brighton
sketchfab
This chalk plaque with inscribed linear patterns was unearthed during excavations at Whitehawk Camp's Neolithic causewayed enclosure in 1935. The piece underwent a reevaluation by ASE in 2016. Measuring up to 136x137mm, it has a thickness of 42.5mm. On its surface, an intricate geometric design emerges from intersecting lines arranged in a grid-like pattern; the incorporation of diagonal lines also forms triangular motifs towards the lower section. The reverse side features three horizontally aligned lines spaced apart, flanked by two vertical lines. The deliberate and methodical nature of these incisions implies intentionality, yet archaeologists remain uncertain about the purpose or significance of this artifact. Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove, accession number R4100/132.
