Improved "Ultimate" Coaster / Infill Swatch Coaster
prusaprinters

A simple, stackable, customizable coaster for hot and cold beverages using infill swatches. Experiment with different densities, infill patterns, and fill angles.

This is heavily inspired by fortinmike's Ultimate coaster and sports the same features. All infill inserts from that model should fit this one.

Changes:

Redesigned chamfer geometry with steep angles to avoid supports and more securely interlock.

Overall height was lowered 1mm.

My swatch insert storage box is available! https://www.printables.com/model/271755-infill-swatch-insert-holder-for-the-improved-ultim

Features:

No Supports!: Prints in 25% less time, with no waste. (0.20mm based on your settings)

Condensation Catcher: No rings here. Water your plants with it!

Two piece design: The infill section is removable for cleaning and easy customization

Additional inserts can be used without the base as extra coasters. (Won't catch condensation)

Stackable: Steep beveled edges allows for space saving stacking.

Customizable: Pick any infill pattern for the inner part. Print it in multiple colors, densities and swap it! Use it to compare infill settings in something you can actually use.

Won't lift off with your cup or glass: Gone are the days of coaster slinging from stuck cups. The low surface contact area and open air design of the infill insert prevent sticking. (Not tested with closed infill designs such as >20% cubic)

Printing Instructions (from fortinmike):

The coaster uses some techniques from this article to reveal the infill pattern on the inner part. It's normal to see a plain block for the inner part on the slicer's plater. With the provided 3mf file (or with the appropriate settings), you must enter preview mode to view the sliced pattern as it will be printed.

Here are the relevant settings to configure (you must be in advanced or expert mode in PrusaSlicer to see that section in the details panel):

Also, if you choose to use the 3mf, note that the infill part is hidden by default. Right-click the little eye icon beside the part in the list to enable it.

Print Settings:

0.15-0.20mm

0.4mm nozzle

The picture is honeycomb 14% and gyroid 10% both fill angle 0.

Inner part: Print the inner infill part with zero top and bottom solid layers so that the infill is visible when sliced. Printing with 3 perimeters gives additional stability and stiffness so the inserts can be used by themselves if desired.

Outer part: Print the base with at least two perimeters and 0.8mm on the top and bottom shells. (Inner swatch should have zero top and bottom layers)

Alternatively, check out my “allhollow” 3mf file. I found that this appears to be the strongest print all while using the least amount of plastic at 35g. This leaves infill on with the flat part of the base, but prints the sides hollow with 4 perimeters.

PRINT INSERT IN PET-G IF YOU INTEND TO USE WITH HOT BEVERAGES!

Should be compatible with derzoelli's holder: https://www.printables.com/model/93590-the-ultimate-holder-for-the-ultimate-coaster

Inspired and similarly modeled after fortinmike's Ultimate coaster: https://www.printables.com/model/60334-the-ultimate-coaster

I'm not sure if this constitutes a remix, as this was modeled from scratch and has a completely different cross-section geometry than fortinmike's version, but since it does share design similarities and features I will credit that model.
