A rotating component of a centrifugal pump is known as an impeller. This vital part transfers energy from the motor that powers the pump directly into the fluid being pumped by rapidly accelerating it away from the center of rotation.[2] The speed gained by the impeller turns into pressure when the outward movement of the fluid is restricted by the pump casing. Typically, an impeller is a short cylindrical shape with an open inlet (known as an eye) to accept incoming fluid, vanes that push the fluid radially outwards, and a splined, keyed, or threaded bore to securely hold a drive shaft in place.
