Impeller
grabcad
An impeller is a central component of a centrifugal pump, typically constructed from materials such as iron, steel, bronze, brass, aluminum or plastic. Driven by the motor connected to the pump, it imparts energy to the fluid by accelerating its outward movement from the center. The resulting velocity turns into pressure when confined by the casing of the pump. Impellers usually have a short cylindrical shape with an open inlet (eye), vane-like structures for pushing fluid radially, and a bore designed to accept a drive-shaft. Cast impellers may be referred to as rotors, which can be directly cast onto their support structure, powered by a gearbox connected to an electric motor, combustion engine or steam turbine. In these cases, the term 'rotor' often encompasses both the spindle and impeller when fastened together with bolts.
