Someone handed me a 2011 iMac that suddenly refused to boot. As I recall, it turned out the hard drive was dead, so I recommended purchasing an SSD - those were the good old days when we could swap certain parts for non-Apple ones. We ended up installing a Crucial SSD. Next, I had to create an adaptor to fit in its place since there wasn't a straightforward way to support it. This was my straightforward approach. A temperature sensor is attached to it since after removing the old HDD that had a cable connected to it to monitor for temperature it would spin the fans at full speed without it.
