Me and my colleagues were driven to distraction by the chaos on our desks, so I decided to whip up a simple shelf that could be clipped onto the iMac in seconds. There are several slots at the bottom of the mac where the speakers emit their sound, providing the perfect spot for clipping on this printed thingamajig. You can stash your pens and pencils right there, out of the way but still within easy reach. In my case, it worked like a charm, but I want to caution you that the tiny components are fragile and can break if mishandled, potentially getting stuck in those slots for good.
