The Ilyushin Il-76 (NATO reporting name: Candid) is a powerful four-engined strategic airlifter designed in the Soviet Union and widely used across Europe, Asia, and Africa. Originally built for military purposes, this plane has since seen extensive service as a commercial freighter, particularly for delivering oversized or extremely heavy cargo. A water-carrying version of the plane has proven highly effective in fire-fighting operations throughout many countries. The Il-76 reportedly carries approximately 90% of ramp-delivered European airfreight and 90% of global disaster relief aid. It is the most widely used dedicated jet freighter in its category, weighing over 40 tons. Texture maps and color information are included to enhance the realism of this airlifter. The aircraft was first conceived by Ilyushin in 1967 to meet a requirement for a freighter capable of carrying a payload of 40 tons (88,000 pounds) over a distance of 5,000 kilometers (2,700 nautical miles; 3,100 statute miles) within six hours. The Il-76 was designed to operate from short and unprepared airstrips and withstand the worst weather conditions found in Siberia and the Soviet Union's Arctic regions. The original design of the Il-76 was influenced by the development of the USC-141 Starlifter. Key differences between the two designs include an observation/navigation glazed nose, heavy-duty landing gear, more powerful engines, a slightly larger cargo hold, and a defensive tail gun (found in military versions). The Il-76 first took to the skies on March 25, 1971. Production of Il-76s was established at Tashkent, Uzbekistan, with over 860 basic transport variants being produced. In the 1990s, modernized variants were developed (MF, TF), but their production was hindered by financial problems affecting the major user, the Russian Air Force. The prototype of a longer variant Il-76MF, boasting increased capacity, first flew on August 1, 1995. Production ceased around 1997, and the factory since then has deteriorated. Some commercial aircraft were modernized to IL-76TD-90VD in 2004, using new engines PS-90 to meet European noise limits. In 2005, China ordered 34 new Il-76MDs and four tankers Il-78 from Russia, with the factory in Tashkent completing 16 incomplete airframes. Plans are underway for production of the IL-76 at a new factory in Ulyanovsk, Russia, in cooperation with Tashkent works.
