The Ilyushin design group created a bomber and torpedo-bomber aircraft. The first flight took place on March 31, 1936. Primarily used by the Soviet Air Force, production occurred between 1936-1939 for the DB-3 model and 1942-1944 for the Il-4 model. A total of 1,528 DB-3s and 5,256 Il-4s were built. The Ilyushin bombers evolved from the initial Ilyushin DB-3 design.
