First I want to let you all know that this is my first ever designed 3D project. I know it is not perfect but it works great. I hope that some of you can take this and improve it, I am excited to see what you can do with this.

As I got in to 3D printing a few months ago my wife decided to get in to miniature painting. We happened to have an extra Ikea Trofast (small) shelf lying around so I decided to design a paint holder drawer for her.

It utilizes OpenLOCK clips to hold the two halves together and then the handle in the front with the pegs makes sure that it doesn't come apart.

I know that on the STL file for the LEFT and RIGHT drawers they look fine but when I sliced them in PrusaSlicer there are little holes in the bottom of the front row of the bottle holders. I attempted to do a minor fix but had no luck and so just printed as is and it works great and the holes are not noticeable once the drawer is in place.

At some point in the design process when I was cutting and merging the openlock parts to the drawers it messed with the mesh and caused the sunburst coming from the back corners, I tried to fix it but my limited skills had no such luck. When printed it actually looks kind of cool and isn't super noticeable.

Everything can be printed with no supports except for the handle because of the pegs and possibly the angle of the bottom of the handle. The screw track works perfectly with no supports.

You can see in the photos that the clearance on either side in the tracks of the drawer is just enough and I tried it in every drawer track on the unit and it works great. You can also double up and use 2 drawers on top of each other if desired.

Specs:

Holds 48 bottles of paint

Tracks for screws to secure it to the shelf unit if you want to make sure that you don't accidentally pull it out too far

5 OpenLOCK clips to secure the 2 halves together

Handle has pegs to secure it to the drawers (no glue needed, but can be used)

Filament Used:

Handle ~ 55g

Left side ~ 413g

Right side ~ 415g

Ikea Trofast shelf:
https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/trofast-wall-storage-light-white-stained-pine-white-s49102304/

FILES:
You only need the 2 drawer files (LEFT and RIGHT), and either the handle file (WHOLE) or (LEFT & RIGHT) if your print bed is smaller than the MK3S+ 210mm x 250mm, it barely fit corner to corner. OpenLOCK clip file.

The Screw Track Angled file I added for reference if anyone is trying to make modifications.

OpenLOCK attribution: https://www.printablescenery.com

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

I3 MK3S

Rafts:

No

Supports:

No

Resolution:

0.3

Infill:

10%
Filament:
Overture PLA Space Gray

Notes:

I used a 0.6mm nozzle.

Also you will want supports on the handle for the pegs but everything else I designed to be support-free. For the handle lay it flat on its back to minimize need for supports and ensure the text prints correctly.

The drawers can be printed perfectly with no supports if you place them on the back flat surface standing up.

Also for the handle I printed it at 0.17mm resolution - everything else the same.

I was also using super speed settings found here:
https://blog.patshead.com/2020/08/how-fast-can-i-3d-print-with-my-prusa-mk3s.html

Post-Printing

Step 1: Insert the 5 OpenLOCK clips in place on 1 of the drawers

Step 2: Press the other drawer together making sure that the clips snap into place

Step 3: Insert the handle with the peg holes to the matching holes on the drawer (this is a really tight fit and I was planning on gluing it but ended up not needing to. I also used a leather work glove to help me press it in, you should hear a click as it slips in to place)

Step 4 (optional): Use small screws to secure it to the track in the shelf unit to ensure that it doesn't accidentally get pulled out too far. #4 screw will work great and you decide if you want 1/4" or 1/2" length

How I Designed This

I designed this using 3D Builder. As I said before, this is my first project ever. I tried to learn how to use Blender but it was way over my skill level at this point since I am also just getting in to 3D printing and I've been learning how to use slicer programs.

It started as a solid box and then I kept trimming different parts off. I made the screw track separately as well as the handle. I went through about 4-5 different versions before I settled on this and decided that it was good enough and printed it.

Category: Art Tools
