This is a threaded rod designed for easy insertion into a pre-drilled 1/2 inch hole and secure assembly via screwing. I intentionally left the rod slightly longer than the actual table thickness to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing look. The metal washer at the top of the long threaded rod, although not extremely robust, should not be used for twisting the parts together due to its limited strength. Before inserting the tube into the hole, thread both parts together to clear any residual threads and perform a test fit while grasping the threaded portion of the rod with your fingers - attempting to twist the washer could cause it to break off. After clearing the threads and performing a successful test fit, you should have no issues using the washer to tighten the parts together through the table surface.
