IKEA Samla Wheel Extension
thingiverse
I stumbled upon the "Ikea Samla - wheels / rollers" from manticus while working on my project for a versatile filament box, specifically designed to handle large rolls. The idea resonated with me as being very practical and efficient. Initially, I faced significant challenges during the printing process due to inadequate support on the printing bed for thin parts. Once I overcame this hurdle, the supports broke away. I temporarily shelved the project but revisited it with renewed motivation after acquiring a new printing bed and gaining experience with Tinkercad. I edited the STL files using Tinkercad and added a 4mm underlayer to provide additional support for the filament axis. This change enabled the axis to pass through all walls while maintaining stability, making threading and securing the filaments significantly easier with superglue. The modification also improved overall stability by ensuring the underside rested fully on the box. Although raising the design was satisfactory, I found it too thin and prone to breaking. To address this, I widened and stiffened the entire structure, resulting in a second variant that has become my personal favorite. This revised version fits all Samla boxes except for the 5-liter model, where the original design can be used as an alternative. For those interested in printing and processing these parts, here are some tips: • Choose an infill of 80% and set the perimeter to 4 to ensure the parts can carry weight. • Print with a brim or apron of 10 to prevent pressure drops. Removing the brim is easy due to the filament's properties. • Use a Dremel and a 2mm drill bit to redrill holes, achieving smooth insertion and rollers. • Cut off filament ends flush and glue them with superglue to prevent drifting out of holders during movement.
