A Secure Cup Holder for an Ikea Poang Chair There are already some cup holders for the Poang Chair available on Thingiverse, but I wanted a design that mounts more securely without requiring additional hardware like nuts and bolts to hold it in place. I also didn't want it scratching the wood or sliding around loosely on the chair's arm. To accomplish this, I created a two-part design that snaps together seamlessly. To prevent damage to the wood, I over-sized the cup holder where it goes around the chair arm, allowing you to add a 70 x 160 mm wrap of bicycle inner-tube underneath it. This minimizes movement and protects the wood from scratches. The inner tube I used was approximately 0.75 mm thick, and my Poang chairs have a wood cross section of about 62 mm x 22 mm, so I designed around these specifications. The cup holder is spacious enough to hold a couple of my wife's favorite cups, as well as most standard dining cups. It also accommodates a standard beverage can or bottle. Two slots are provided for the cup handle, allowing you to mount it on either the right or left side of the chair. To install the cup holder, simply wrap the inner tube over the top of the chair arm and place the main cup holder on top of it. From underneath, push the 90-degree hooked end of the locking piece into the main part and rotate it up to snap it into place. Please note that while the cup holder stays on securely, removal requires a bit more effort. To take it off, use a medium flat head screwdriver to pry out the middle latch of the locking part from underneath (see photo). Once released, pull up on the cup to release the outer latches and separate the parts. Be cautious not to scratch your chair during this process, and consider practicing assembly and disassembly while the cup holder is off the chair.
