IJN Myoko served as the lead ship of a four-member myoko-class of heavy cruisers for the Imperial Japanese Navy, which were highly active during World War II. Named after Mount Myoko in Niigata Prefecture, the other ships of her class included Nachi, Ashigara, and Haguro. Myōkō was officially approved under the 1922-29 Fleet Modernization Program as the first heavy cruiser to be built by Japan within strict design constraints imposed by the Washington Naval Treaty, making her the pioneering ship in a "10,000 ton" category constructed by any nation. Vice Admiral Yuzuru Hiraga skillfully managed to keep the original design from becoming top-heavy early on by repeatedly rejecting demands for additional equipment on upper decks made by the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff. Nevertheless, during modification and rebuilding efforts in the 1930s, her final displacement rose significantly to 15,933 tons, exceeding treaty limits.
