Igreja De Santa Rita

Built in 1722 by freed blacks under the invocation of Boy God, Saint Rita and Saint Quitéria, this church was repaired and rebuilt several years later with an increase by white devotees who began using it as a parish during the construction of that new temple. It is the oldest church in town due to the demolition of St. Roque's chapels and the old parish. The church has Jesuit architecture and presents internal elements, which integrate it, characteristics of baroque-rococo, notably in the polychromed wood carvings on the high altar, which have angels praying on both sides of the fronton, the only ones on altars in Paraty. Today, a Museum of Sacred Art operates within this church under the responsibility of the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute IPHAN with a permanent exhibition of images, silverware, linens and sacred objects from the parish.
