After trying various designs, I created my own custom fit for the spools from German filament supplier iGo3D.com, specifically designed for 1.75mm filament. An updated version (12.01.2014) now includes a 3mm option, although it hasn't been personally tested. Print multiple pieces at once with 0.5mm shell and 100% infill for easy snapping onto the spool.
