The Ictíneo, constructed by Monturiol, was the first submarine to successfully navigate underwater. It solved numerous theoretical and practical challenges, such as developing a solid-state chemical fuel engine, generating oxygen, and producing light. Despite being made of wood, it had a copper coating to prevent osmosis, as stated by Monturiol himself.
