Iconic Lion at the Steps of the Art Institute of Chicago (south)

I am thrilled to be Artist-In-Residence at the esteemed Art Institute of Chicago. Between now and the end of June 2014, I will be creating a brand new body of work in the Ryan Education Center, where I will also be conducting live demonstrations on 3D printing, scanning, and modeling. To kick off my residency, I have decided to scan and share with you the second majestic Lion by Edward Kemeys that stands guard at the front entrance of AIC on Michigan Avenue. Just last summer, in 2012, I had scanned and published the north Lion, which has since become an integral part of many of my 3D printed art pieces. Today, I am uploading the second Lion, who proudly guards the south end of the entrance. Over the next few months, I will be working tirelessly to create a series of unique pieces featuring both Lions, which will be showcased in my demonstrations and workshops. Edward Kemeys, an American artist born in 1843, passed away in 1907. His remarkable work, "Lions (a pair)", created in 1893, is a breathtaking bronze sculpture with a striking green patina. Measuring an impressive 261.7 x 114.2 x 287 cm, this magnificent artwork was gifted to the Art Institute of Chicago by Mrs. Henry Field in 1893. You can learn more about Edward Kemeys' incredible art and my residency at AIC by visiting their website: http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/656?search_no=1&index=0 or attending one of my upcoming events: http://www.artic.edu/event/artist-residence-3-d-printing-tom-burtonwood.
