Lenin is a Soviet nuclear-powered icebreaker that made history by being both the world's first nuclear-powered surface ship and the first civilian vessel to be powered by nuclear energy. Launched in 1957, Lenin entered service in 1959 and played a vital role in clearing sea routes for cargo ships along Russia's northern coast. During its years of operation, the ship covered over 85,000 miles during the Arctic navigation season, with almost 65,000 miles navigated through ice. On April 10, 1974, Lenin was awarded the Order of Lenin for its outstanding service. The vessel was officially decommissioned in 1989 and is now permanently based at Murmansk as a museum ship.
