An ice tool is a highly specialized development of the modern ice axe, often referred to as an ice axe or technical axe, used primarily in challenging ice climbing situations. Typically, two ice tools are utilized by each climber for the duration of a pitch, although they may be shared among multiple climbers in certain circumstances, such as top-rope-anchored climbs. In contrast, classical "ice axes" are employed one per person over extended periods, often spanning hours or days, as a party travels across snow or glacier terrain. In regions where "ice tool" is commonly used interchangeably with "ice axe," traditional "ice axes" are frequently referred to as "traveling axes," "walking axes," or "general mountaineering axes" to distinguish them from specialized tools. When engaging in vertical ice climbing, two tools are essential for the climber, who relies on cramponed feet for support. Each tool is used alternately to maintain balance with the body's center of mass directly above the toes, while repositioning the other tool to a higher position, paving the way for the climber to raise their body weight using the legs and initiate the process again.
